Benign Lesion Removal

CO2 laser is commonly used for the removal of benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions. It is a precise, controlled treatment that allows the practitioner to remove unwanted skin growths while minimising damage to the surrounding tissue.

Benign lesions that can be treated with CO2 laser include:

  • Skin tags

  • Seborrhoeic keratoses

  • Warts

  • Milia

  • Certain benign moles (if clinically appropriate)

  • Syringomas

  • Cherry angiomas (in some cases)

About Benign Moles

The COâ‚‚ laser works by emitting a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by water in the skin cells. This causes rapid heating and vaporisation of the targeted tissue. Because the laser is very precise, it allows the clinician to remove the lesion layer by layer with excellent control and minimal bleeding.

Benefits of COâ‚‚ laser removal include:

  • High precision and control

  • Minimal bleeding during the procedure

  • Reduced risk of infection

  • Quick treatment time

  • Usually minimal damage to surrounding skin

  • Good cosmetic outcomes

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic, depending on the size and location of the lesion. Small lesions can often be removed in just a few minutes.

Post laser treatment

After treatment, the area typically forms a small superficial wound or crust. Healing usually takes:

  • 5–10 days for small, superficial lesions

  • 1–3 weeks for larger or deeper lesions

Mild redness may persist for several weeks as the skin continues to heal. Most patients can return to normal activities shortly after treatment, although sun protection is essential to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
