Keloid Scar Treatments

CO2 ablative laser treatments can be effectively combined with steroid injections for the management of thick, raised scars such as hypertrophic scars and keloids.

Ablative CO2 laser works by creating controlled micro-columns of thermal injury within the scar tissue. This helps to break down dense collagen bundles, soften the scar, and stimulate remodelling of the dermis. The treatment also improves texture, thickness, and sometimes pigmentation irregularities.

When combined with intralesional steroid injections (most commonly triamcinolone), the results can be enhanced. The laser creates micro-channels within the scar tissue, which can improve penetration and distribution of the steroid. Steroids help to reduce inflammation, decrease excessive collagen production, and flatten raised scars.

Together, this combination can:

  • Reduce scar thickness and firmness

  • Improve texture and pliability

  • Decrease redness and itching

  • Improve overall cosmetic appearance

  • Lower recurrence rates in keloid-prone scars

About Keloid Scar Treatments

Treatment protocols vary, but patients often require multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on the size, age, and severity of the scar, as well as individual healing response.

In most cases patient need 1 initial session (which includes ablation of the lesion to flatten it followed by immediate steroid injections and then followed up by further steroid injections 4-6 weeks later)

CO2 ablation is an excellent treatment but keloid scars are stubborn and do have high recurrence rates if not treated aggressively
